Preparing For The New SAT
A parent guide to helping your child excel on college placement testing.

 

What is the SAT?
•  A standardized test that high school juniors and seniors take for college entrance / course placement.  SAT is an acronym for Scholastic Aptitude Test.
•  There are three sections:  Reading, Math, and Writing.
•  It is a timed test.
•  Scores range from 200-800 in each section.
•  Cost = $41.50
•  Offered in Oct., Nov., Dec., Jan., April, May, and June.

How do I help my child register for the SAT?
•  Visit www.collegeboard.com.
•  Check out the Registration Bulletin from your Guidance Office.
•  You will need the high school CEEB code.
•  Fee waivers are available at Student Services - ask if you qualify.

How would my child prepare and practice for the SAT?
•  Take the New SAT prep class offered at your high school.
•  Take advanced courses.
•  Go online: www.collegeboard.com for practice tests.
•  Use SAT study guides - available in Student Services.
•  Review SAT study guides available in the resource section of most public libraries.
•  Purchase SAT prep books at local book stores or online.
•  Access the free SAT Online Readiness Program to take full-length practice tests, review essay prompts and practice questions with answer explanations.  Follow these steps:

   -Go to www.collegeboard.com/satonlinecourseschool;
   -Click on "Register Now" in student box;
   -Enter school CEEB code;
   -Create College Board account or sign in to an existing account.

Where can my child use a computer if we do not have one at home?
•  Community centers
•  Public libraries
•  High school media center or computer labs
•  Friend's house.

What if we have questions?
•  Call or visit your child's school counselor
•  Contact the College Board

•  By going online:  www.collegeboard.com.
•  By going online:  www.cfnc.org (North Carolina only).
•  By visiting your high school Student Services department to request a SAT Registration Bulletin.
